Fbi Miami Shootout - The 1980s were a turbulent time in South Florida, with drug dealers and other criminals regularly shooting up the area. The villains at the center of the era's worst feud were two landscape architects.
With all the FBI's major crackdowns during Prohibition and against gangsters and communists over the years, April 11, 1986 - 35 years ago - is known as the FBI's deadliest day. At least seven officers were involved, two of whom died. The agency estimated that 145 shots were fired in a matter of minutes.

More from the FBI website: The FBI was looking for William Matix of Ohio and Michael Lee Platt of San Diego for allegedly carrying high-caliber guns and stolen cars. The two came to Miami in 1984 and started a landscape service. But since the fall, he has been implicated in a number of violent robberies, including one in March 1986 where a gunfight erupted.
Miami Special Agents Benjamin Grogan, 53, and Jerry Dove, 30, were in one of five cars following two of the stolen Chevrolet Monte Carlo near the Suniland mall.
Criminals drove from the United States. 1 and Farmers Markets is one block behind the convenience store. The officer, 43-year-old Richard Manauzzi, was alone in a car trying to drive into a tree. One of the criminals displayed a gun. Three FBI cars drove up. Two men opened fire with a rifle, a rifle and a revolver.
Alone - wounded, but hit the Matix and caught fire. Officers found Gilbert Orrantia, 27, and Ronald Risner, 43, in their car, which Orrantia had already driven.

Officers Edmundo Mireles, 33, and John Hanlon, 48, stopped their vehicles across the street and came under heavy fire and were seriously injured, despite being able to hit the assailants several times. Platt approached Grogan with a dove and shot him dead in his car at close range. He also shot Hanlon.
Unfazed, Mireles stood up with one good hand and began shooting at the criminals as they attempted to flee in the dove and Grogan's car. He pulled out a revolver and fired, killing two men.
The FBI estimates: two agents were killed, three were seriously injured, and two others were injured. Risner wasn't the only one hurt. Farag's war forced the FBI to study its weapons. The criminals even used high-powered weapons that pierced the officers' armor. The agency then realized that the staff had more firepower.

William Matix and Michael Platt met in 1975 while working as deputies in Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and soon became close friends.
When Mattix's wife was murdered in 1983, Platt convinced him to move to Miami. There they started logging. A year later, Platt's wife committed suicide. Suspicious?
The first crime involving Matix and Platt occurred on October 5, 1985, when they killed Emilio Briel, a target hunter in the Everglades.
Over the past two weeks, Matix and Platt had attempted to rob three armored vehicles, but they were unsuccessful.

In total, they managed to steal a bag worth $2,800. At today's price of $7,316, it's not that impressive.
In January 1986, the pair targeted another armored vehicle and opened fire on the guard with a rifle and a Ruger Mini-14.
The men needed a new way out and returned to the Everglades. There they found another recreational shooter, Jose Collazo.
After shooting Collazo, the two stole a Smith & Wesson Model 14, a .22 Marlin and a black Monte Carlo.

After another bank robbery, the FBI concluded that the as-yet-unknown criminals would soon strike again. So they searched for the black Monte Carlo.
On April 11, 1986, 14 FBI agents began a sweep and quickly located the vehicle. Platt and Matix tried to escape before being forced off the road.
There were eight officers armed with two Remington 870 rifles, three S&W Model 459 9mm handguns, two .357 Magnums and five .38 revolvers.
A Matix S&W Model 3000 12-gauge was fired at the officers, who were immediately shot in the head and neck.

Officers also killed Grogan and his pigeon as they got into their car. Agent Ed Mireles eventually killed Platt with a .357 bullet to the chest.
That fateful day led to major changes in FBI policy. Reloading was considered too difficult in continuous combat.
S&W .40 cartridges and semi-automatic pistols have replaced the FBI as standard FBI issue to respond to FBI subpoenas.
